Bicycling "101"

Well I wanted a full century today. Took road bike out for about 40 miles in morning. That went fast and easy. I was wondering where the heat was, that I had been warned about.

Came home and ate a sandwich and headed out on the CX bike to ride a dirt Metric 62 miles at 1:00 p.m.

Holy smokers did it get hot. I was being cooked. The trail is still washed out, and some places were mud, or big rocks, or gravel you would sink your tires to deep to pedal well in. Some places I was only averaging only 5 mph.

The heat and humidity was boiling me. I began to question the sanity of this. Wondering what makes me tick, and why keep going.

The trail got better, and my speed picked up, going 15 mph helps to cool down with the breeze that goes with it. So I endured. The final 5 miles I was shot, drinking over 6 quarts of fluid on just the afternoon ride, that was boiled out of me. Right or wrong, I'm glad I finished what I started out to do.

I packed 64 oz of water, and V8 tomato juice plus a pop. The V8 seems to work great for salt and mineral replacement. I replenished about the same amount in the town of Farley.

Quite a steep drop off here.

How do black cows, eating green grass, make white milk?

The coolest spot all afternoon, in this under the highway tunnel.

Rode 101 miles today, bike is packed full of grime, but will have to wait until tomorrow.

Ride ON.
